The Douro Valley and Northern Portugal
An exceptional World Heritage Site since 2003
Portugal is best known for its fortified wines Port and Madeira. Although best known for its port, northern Portugal has in recent years earned a reputation for producing some of Europe’s most interesting flavor-forward reds, like some outstanding still wines. The appellations are classified as DOC. (Denominacao de Origem Controlada).
The main wine producing regions are the Douro, Dao, Bairrada, Vinho Verde, Terras do Sado and Alentejo. White wines are produced from indigenous grape varietals, and the blend can encompass many: Loureiro, Arinto, Malvasia Fina and Alvarinho. For reds: Touriga Nacional, Baga, Castelao, Trincadeira and Tinta Roriz (Aragones).
